Background

Keeping Annie E. Casey in the National Spotlight

Established in 1948, the Annie E. Casey Foundation is a private philanthropy based in Baltimore.  The nonprofit enables federal agencies and regions across the nation to create innovative and cost-effective responses to the issues negatively affecting children: poverty, unnecessary disconnection from family, and limited access to opportunity. The annual KIDS COUNT Data Book, along with corresponding State Profiles, is the premier source for data on child and family well-being in the United States. Each year, the reports garners significant national media attention, raising the visibility of children’s issues through a non-partisan, evidence-based perspective.

Challenge

Communicating Significant Data

The KIDS COUNT Data Book, along with corresponding National and State Profiles, features hundreds of indicators, data, and graphics to provide a detailed picture of how children are faring in the United States. It was crucial to present this information in a clear and comprehensive manner to ensure key stakeholders and decision makers understood the importance of children’s well-being and ways they could support them.

Solution

Updating an Unwavering Report

Annie E. Casey sought a way to make the 28th Annual KIDS COUNT Data Book and Profiles more modern and relevant to today’s readership. Our team adjusted their current layout grid and styles for a more digestible data, and we reworked infographics for a fresher look. We also simplified their existing tables and charts so readers and policymakers could reference the data quickly, making the overall story for each individual state easier to understand.

Results

Sharing Data with the Community

The Kids Count report launched this past summer and both the Foundation and key stakeholders were excited about the refreshed design. The updated layout and simplified data made it easier for policymakers and the community to share information and advocate for their state’s children.
