For more than eight decades, the USO has served as a steady presence for U.S. service members and their families – offering moments of comfort, connection, and care in the midst of service. Each year, that work reaches more than 2 million people. But during Military Appreciation Month, the organization wasn’t simply looking to increase visibility. It wanted to gently remind supporters of something often overlooked: meaningful impact begins with individual action.
That can be a note written to a service member. A single donation. An hour spent volunteering. On their own, these actions may feel small. Together, they form the foundation of the USO’s mission. That belief shaped It Starts With You, an awareness campaign designed to help civilians, donors, and corporate partners see themselves more clearly in the organization’s impact – and to understand how their participation truly matters.
Like many large nonprofits and military-adjacent organizations, the USO faced the quiet complexity of scale. Messaging varied across teams and partners. Campaign materials were scattered. Staff and volunteers wanted to help, but didn’t always have the time or tools to do so with confidence.
There was also a deeper challenge at hand: how to strengthen donor engagement without losing the emotional integrity of the mission. The USO needed to connect people to service members’ experiences in a way that felt respectful, human, and real – while also showing how individual acts of support add up to something much larger. And ideally, the organization wanted a nonprofit campaign approach that could endure beyond a single moment or observance.
The solution was not louder messaging, but clearer storytelling. Under the It Starts With You theme, the USO focused on the “power of one” – the idea that one message, one gift, or one volunteer hour can ripple outward to strengthen the broader military community.
To make participation easier, the USO created turnkey campaign toolkits for staff, board members, and corporate partners. These included thoughtfully written emails, social posts, visuals, and calls to action – each designed to feel authentic, not scripted. All materials lived in a centralized SharePoint hub, offering a shared foundation for cause-driven marketing and consistent nonprofit messaging.
The campaign also included a dedicated splash page tied to Military Appreciation Month, featuring a time-sensitive donation appeal and stories of individuals whose actions embodied the campaign’s message. Across social channels and key observances like Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day, the USO shared these stories – adjusting along the way to highlight more female-centered narratives as engagement insights emerged.
The campaign’s impact showed up both in numbers and in connection. Across 161 posts, It Starts With You generated more than 280,000 impressions, 5,000 engagements, and a 4.4% top engagement rate. One story alone sparked 387 engagements – evidence that nonprofit storytelling, when rooted in real human experience, still resonates.
Just as importantly, the campaign helped close the distance between civilians and service members. It gave advocates the confidence and clarity to share the mission in their own voices. And it left the USO with something lasting: a reusable awareness campaign framework grounded in individual impact, ready to support future initiatives.
