Background

Supporting a 100+ year-old institution

Catholic Charities of Baltimore is one of Maryland’s largest nonprofit social services agencies, serving vulnerable populations through programs addressing poverty, housing insecurity, behavioral health, immigration services, and family support. They needed a strategic marketing partner to reach new audiences, acquire first-time donors, and amplify program awareness—while managing multiple concurrent initiatives and responding rapidly to emerging community needs.

But here’s the challenge: How do you build brand awareness for a 100+ year-old institution while simultaneously launching targeted campaigns, responding to urgent crisis communications, and driving measurable donor acquisition—all with a small internal team managing countless competing priorities?

This wasn’t just a marketing problem—it was an organizational capacity challenge.

The Challenge

Reaching new audiences while providing rapid response

Catholic Charities came to Orange Element with ambitious goals but limited bandwidth. Their marketing needs spanned multiple dimensions:

First-Time Donor Acquisition: They needed to reach younger, statewide audiences and convert them into recurring donors, expanding beyond their traditional base to ensure long-term sustainability.

Program-Specific Awareness: Villa Maria Behavioral Health, offering mental health and substance use treatment through eight clinics and 100+ school partnerships, was overshadowed by the larger Catholic Charities brand. Even after a name change, the program struggled with visibility. Referral partners were unclear about services, donors didn’t grasp the impact, and staff created their own materials, leading to inconsistent messaging.

Rapid Crisis Response: When urgent community needs arose—like potential SNAP benefit cuts threatening food security for thousands—Catholic Charities needed to pivot immediately with compelling communications that drove donations within days, not weeks.

Annual Storytelling: Their annual report needed to showcase impact across dozens of programs while serving multiple audiences: major donors, corporate partners, foundations, board members, and the broader community.

Integrated Channel Management: All of this work needed to happen simultaneously across paid advertising, social media, email marketing, event activations, and print collateral—with seamless coordination between Orange Element and Catholic Charities’ internal stakeholders.

Without a strategic partner who could manage this complexity, provide rapid turnaround, and maintain quality across all deliverables, Catholic Charities risked diluted messaging, missed opportunities, and donor fatigue.

Our Approach

Rooted in strategy to provide cross-channel clarity

Orange Element coordinates a 14-person team managing four concurrent workstreams with the flexibility to surge capacity for urgent needs:

Initiative 1: First-Time Donor Acquisition Campaign
We developed a comprehensive, multi-channel campaign targeting younger audiences (ages 25-45) across Maryland to convert them to recurring monthly donors. The strategy encompassed paid media (Google Ads and Meta), organic social content highlighting impact stories, email nurture sequences, and event activations. Our messaging emphasized tangible impact—showing exactly how donations translate to meals served, families housed, and individuals supported—while making giving accessible through multiple entry points.

Initiative 2: Villa Maria Behavioral Health Brand Clarity
We created a comprehensive Key Messaging Guide rooted in Villa Maria’s values and tailored to distinct audiences: clients seeking care, referral partners, donors, and staff. The guide provided foundational brand messaging, audience-specific variations, and practical implementation instructions—all in approachable language. This gave Villa Maria a distinct voice within Catholic Charities, ensuring staff across eight clinic locations use consistent language that boosts credibility while helping referral partners and clients clearly understand specialized services.

Initiative 3: Rapid Crisis Response – SNAP Benefits Campaign
When potential federal SNAP benefit cuts threatened food insecurity, Catholic Charities needed to mobilize donors immediately. We pivoted within 48 hours to develop urgent appeal messaging, social media content, and email communications driving donations to food programs. This same-week turnaround showcased our capacity to respond to emerging priorities without compromising ongoing campaign work.

Initiative 4: Annual Report Development & Content Integration
We designed and produced Catholic Charities’ 2025 Annual Report, weaving together impact stories, program highlights, financial transparency, and donor recognition. Rather than treating it as standalone, we strategically repurposed report content—particularly compelling client stories and program statistics—across social media, email newsletters, and campaign messaging throughout the year, maximizing content value while ensuring consistent storytelling.

Multi-Channel Campaign Orchestration
Throughout all initiatives, we maintained strategic oversight of how paid media, organic social, email, and event materials worked together. Our team managed paid advertising optimization while directing creative strategy, content development, and campaign messaging—ensuring every touchpoint reinforced core narratives while leveraging each platform’s strengths.

The Results

A new marketing foundation to carry forward

Operational Excellence: From strategy through launch in under one month for the initial donor acquisition campaign, demonstrating our ability to mobilize quickly without sacrificing strategic rigor while managing multiple concurrent initiatives.

Brand Clarity: Villa Maria Behavioral Health now has a distinct brand identity with consistent messaging that helps staff communicate confidently, referral partners make informed recommendations, and potential clients understand specialized care.

Responsive Partnership: Our ability to pivot for SNAP crisis communications within 48 hours while maintaining momentum on planned campaigns proved the value of our flexible partnership model—exactly the agile support nonprofits need.

Sustained Engagement: Monthly campaign investments with measurable performances across donor acquisition, social engagement, email list growth, and event attendance. Most importantly, Catholic Charities’ continued partnership into year two validates that our approach delivers sustained value.

Content Efficiency: By integrating annual report storytelling across channels throughout the year, we ensured content development investment drove impact far beyond a single publication—maximizing limited nonprofit marketing budgets.

The Results
