Background

Highlighting the Many Ways Catholic Charities Serves Maryland Communities

Catholic Charities of Baltimore is a nonprofit organization serving more than 200,000 Marylanders every year, supporting children, families, seniors, immigrants, and individuals navigating poverty or crisis. With over 80 programs and a large network of donors and volunteers, the organization needed an annual report that could clearly communicate its impact while still feeling human and approachable.

Previous reports were informative but dense, making it difficult for readers to immediately grasp the breadth of the organization’s work. Catholic Charities wanted a report that reflected their mission through nonprofit storytelling and mission-driven design – something that would resonate with donors, partners, and internal teams alike.

The Challenge

Showcasing How Programs Transform Lives

The main challenge was presenting a large volume of content in a way that was digestible, engaging, and visually appealing. With dozens of programs and hundreds of individual stories, the risk was that key messages could get lost or feel overwhelming.

The report also needed to reach multiple audiences:

  • Donors looking for proof of impact
  • Board members interested in strategy and organizational progress
  • Community partners seeking program insights
  • Staff who needed a clear structure for future reports

The organization wanted an approach that not only highlighted the data but also strengthened their overall brand identity. Our goal was to create an annual report design that combined storytelling, visuals, and strategy for clear stakeholder communications and to clearly show the impact on the communities served.

Solution

Combining Human Stories, Clear Structure, and Mission-Driven Design

We approached the project by integrating nonprofit storytelling, data visualization for nonprofits, and impact report design principles to create a report that was both informative and inviting.

Human-centered storytelling
Stories were selected to represent the organization’s core themes: healing trauma and addiction, aging with dignity, welcoming new neighbors, achieving independence, empowering careers, and supporting children and families. Each narrative was condensed into concise, emotionally resonant vignettes supported by quotes, photography, and key outcomes. This approach ensured readers could connect with the people behind the programs without getting lost in dense text.

Organized and accessible structure
The report was divided into clear, intuitive sections:

  • Leadership message and mission overview
  • High-level organizational impact
  • Six thematic program areas
  • Stories paired with essential program data
  • Financial overview and donor recognition

This structure allowed readers to skim for the big picture or dive deeper into individual programs, making the content approachable for all audiences.

Design for clarity, warmth, and mission alignment
Our design combined professional polish with approachability, employing:

  • Large, authentic photography to humanize the work
  • Infographic-style visuals to make outcomes clear
  • Color-coded stories and guiding lines to emphasize the theme of Guided By Love
  • Ample white space for readability
  • A consistent grid to unify content across sections

This impact report design and mission-driven design approach ensured that the report was visually appealing, clear, and aligned with Catholic Charities’ brand values. It also established a strong foundation for future reports, allowing us to build on this work and continue pushing creative boundaries.

The Results

Stronger Engagement, Clearer Impact, and a Reusable Reporting Framework

The redesigned report helped Catholic Charities strengthen engagement with donors, stakeholders, and internal teams:

  • Stories and data were easier to understand, improving engagement
  • The organization’s programmatic breadth was presented in a cohesive, unified way
  • Staff gained confidence in sharing the report with funders and partners
  • The new structure established a repeatable framework for future annual report design projects

Staff shared that the report finally felt reflective of the organization’s mission and the people it serves. Donors responded positively to the balance of narrative, nonprofit storytelling, and visual clarity, seeing the tangible impact of their support.

The Results

Key Takeaways

  • Design for Different Depths of Engagement: People interact with information in different ways. Building layered content – “skim, swim, dive” – helps everyone connect, whether they’re just scanning headlines or diving deep into every story.
  • Lead with Visual Storytelling: Thoughtful use of photos, icons, and clear data visualizations can make impact tangible and complex information easier to understand.
  • Collaborate Early and Often: Bringing clients into layout and content discussions from the start reduces back-and-forth later and fosters a sense of shared ownership over the final product.
  • Balance Emotion with Structure: Emotional storytelling captures attention, and pairing it with a clear design hierarchy ensures the message is both compelling and easy to follow.
  • Respect Context and Transition: Design can guide people through moments of organizational change, helping communicate stability, purpose, and continuity with clarity and care.
